The Putts for Mutts and Caddies for Kitties golf fundraiser for the Putnam Animal Relief Center Fund, held Monday, Oct. 12, was a great success, according to shelter volunteer Karen Haynes.
Approximately $4,428 was raised by the golf scramble co-sponsored by County Commissioner Joe Haynes and his wife Karen, County Manager Brian Donat, AEP's Amos Plant and AVI Food Service.
The money will be dedicated to building a much-needed new animal shelter for the county.
Raising the money necessary to build a new shelter has been a longtime project for Haynes and others.
Estimated cost for the facility is currently $700,000.
It will be built on a 14-acre site the county acquired from the state along W.Va. 62, just across the Winfield Bridge headed toward Red House Hill.
Along with previous fundraisers for the shelter, some area businesses also have pledged to donate labor and construction materials.
The county has outgrown the current "temporary" shelter, which dates from 1985. The metal building is prone to leaks and other problems.
The new 10,000-square-foot building will have 75 dog runs and 50 cat cages, rather than the 24 and 15 at the existing facility.
It will feature areas designed expressly for food preparation, grooming and laundry, plus a bonding area for potential owners and the animals.
Many area businesses stepped up to enter teams or sponsor holes, Haynes said.
Donations to the shelter fund may be made by making checks payable to PARCF and forwarding to First State Bank, 3754 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane, W.Va. 25526.
