Beau-Tea-Full Moments hosting benefit fashion show
  • Putnam entrepreneur helping homeless shelter
  • High tea and high fashion will combine for a good cause in an elegant South Charleston setting next month.

On Nov. 14, the Beau-Tea-Full Moments tearoom at 600 D St., will host a fashion show and high tea, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the YWCA's Sojourner's Shelter in Charleston.

The fashion show and tea will be offered at three different times - 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and at 3 p.m. The cost is $19.95 per person. Reservations are required. Call 304-744-3855.

The high tea menu will include salad, assorted tea sandwiches, cheese ball, quiche, scones, tea cookies, chocolate-covered strawberries, specialty desserts and assorted cold beverages and hot teas.

Beau-Tea-Full Moments owner Kim Shirkey of Putnam County was inspired to help the Sojourner's Shelter because of its service to homeless women and their children.

"It's a great organization," Shirkey said.

In fact, Sojourner's provides emergency shelter and support services to homeless single women, women with children, men with custody of their children and intact families.

The fashion show and high tea will help Sojourner's purchase a new van, Shirkey said.

The fashion show will feature models wearing the latest styles in clothing from Geraniums and Sweet Peas.

"And there's going to be a couple of other vendors here, too."

The fashions will include a lot of Christmas and holiday wear, Shirkey said.

Sojourner's Director Margaret Taylor said she is grateful to Shirkey for helping the shelter fund a new van, which will be used to take children staying at the shelter on field trips and other activities.

The shelter's current, 15-passenger van is 11 years old and in such disrepair that it would not be cost effective to fix it, Taylor said.

"We do a number of activities with the kids and take them to various places. We've had to borrow a van," Taylor said.

    Sojourner's relies on community support.

"We are so grateful to her (Shirkey) for choosing Sojourner's. It's awesome when the community comes together," she said.

Shirkey is such a believer in Sojourner's that she would like to one day decorate one of its rooms in the name of Beau-Tea-Full Moments.

"I'd like to decorate a room, so that when people are in transition, they would have a lovely room to go to," she said.

Taylor said Sojourner's Adopt-A-Room program allows organizations to "spruce up" rooms at the shelter by making them more attractive for residents.

"We try to keep it home-like," Taylor said.
