The Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College has a variety of classes and workshops scheduled in the coming weeks. The choices include:
ACT Review Classes
Actual sample test questions will be used and test-taking techniques will be covered. These classes are valuable for students needing an intensive review program to meet entrance-level requirements for colleges, to meet entrance-level requirements for special programs of study, to meet scholarship eligibility levels and to meet eligibility for the Promise scholarship. There will be three subject matter sections.
An eight-hour ACT English review program will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on the following Mondays: Nov. 9, 16, 30 and Dec. 7. The registration fee for the English Review program is $45. This program provides a basic review of high school English skills including parts of speech, punctuation, grammar, usage, and sentence structure.
An eight-hour ACT math review program will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: Nov. 11 and 18 and on Dec. 2 and 9. The registration fee is $45. This workshop includes computations with whole numbers, fractions, percentages, proportions, and decimals. Subjects covered include algebra, geometry and elementary trigonometry.
A six-hour ACT reading comprehension and science reasoning review program will be offered from 6 to 8:40 p.m. on the following Fridays: Nov. 13 and 20 and Dec. 4. The registration fee is $45. The program includes strategies for pacing yourself and for answering questions from reading passages and sets of scientific information.
All three programs will be held in Room 112 of the Cole Complex on the Kanawha Valley Community & Technical College campus in Institute.
Beginning Basket Weaving
Offered on three Saturdays, beginning Oct. 31
Learn the basic techniques of basket weaving including: laying the base, twining, over/under and continuous weaver. Participants will complete three basket projects and will need to bring a small spray bottle, a large (old) towel, heavy-duty scissors, tape measure, pencil and craft clips or wooden clothespins, but all other materials will be supplied.
The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 112 of the Cole Complex in Institute. The class dates are Oct. 31 and Nov. 7 and 14. The registration fee is $100.
Advanced Adobe Photoshop
Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 830 of Wallace Hall, Institute.
This course will explain how to use color fills, gradients, patterns and overlays; to create layer masks, grayscale masks, and clipping masks to show or hide various parts of an image; to create and edit paths and convert type to paths; how to apply a variety of creative effects, use the Vanishing Point feature and Smart Filters; create layer comps; and prepare images for use in video productions.
The registration fee is $85 and includes a student textbook.
Grantsmanship Workshop
Oct. 29 and 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Room 219 of the Cole Complex, Institute
This non-credit workshop includes hands-on, step-by-step guidance in writing a full proposal document complete with the mission statement, objectives, activities, methods, budget, evaluation and follow-up after submission.
Instructed by Jan Hensley, grantsmanship certified instructor, the course combines instruction and practical experience to take participants step by step through all the stages of grant writing. Participants should come prepared with a proposal idea and will develop a basic proposal during this two-day workshop.
The registration fee is $149.
